When we refer to believers who are young in the faith, we’re talking about Christians who have not yet developed spiritual maturity. This includes those who have recently accepted Christ and are still exploring the basics of their faith, as well as individuals who have been saved for some time but just haven’t matured. Supporting these individuals is important, as interactions with grounded believers can significantly influence their growth and commitment to following Christ. Here are ten practical ways we can encourage and nurture newer or immature Christians in our church, helping them feel welcome and equipping them to deepen their relationship with God.
Offer Grace as They Learn
Remember that everyone grows at their own pace. Be patient and forgiving as they figure things out in their faith journey.
Ephesians 4:32 "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
Show Them Love
Show Christ-like love through kindness and being willing to talk with them. Make them feel welcome and appreciated in our church.
1 John 4:19 "We love him, because he first loved us."
Encourage Them
Give them some uplifting words and support. Celebrate their progress and remind them how much they matter in Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 "Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do."
Be Willing to Mentor
Spend some time mentoring them in their spiritual growth. Share your experiences and help guide them on their path with God.
2 Timothy 2:2 "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."
Pray for Them
Keep them in your prayers often. Lift them up, asking God to guide and strengthen them in their faith.
James 5:16 "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."
Point Them to Scripture
Help them dig into the Bible, searching for answers to questions and showing them that Scripture is our authority for faith and practice.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."
Model a Christ-like Life
Live out your faith in everyday life. Let your actions show what it means to follow Christ and set a positive example for them.
Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Encourage Involvement in Church Activities
Help them connect with others by encouraging them to jump into church activities and events. This builds a sense of belonging and support.
Hebrews 10:24-25 "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
Be Available for Questions
Be approachable and allow people to ask questions about the Lord, the Bible, or any questions they may have.
Proverbs 18:15 "The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge."
Share Personal Testimonies
Open up about your own journey and experiences with faith. Sharing your story can help them and show that they’re not alone in whatever struggles they may be having.
Revelation 12:11 "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."
